The Department of Labor has recently proposed a rule that accounting and other professionals who provide financial investment advice on a regular basis to their clients have a fiduciary responsibility, meaning they should have their clients’ best interests in mind, not what gives them the most commission. It typically only applies if the advisor is charging a fee for providing the investment advice.
